Checklist A: Simple Dos and Don'ts for Collaboration and Partnership

Consider these points for a successful partnership
Recognise the benefits of partnerships for your institution, community and/or region
Establish clear rules for governing the partnership
Work with those who share common aims and objectives
Carry out a SWOT analysis to assess these benefits
Incorporate collaboration into organisational business planning
Develop staff policies to ensure partnership working is an accepted practice
Agree joint SMART objectives
Monitor and evaluate partnership programmes
Feed lessons from monitoring and evaluation back into the project
Make effective use of ICT for communication to develop and sustain the partnership
Build on existing partnerships using innovation
Distribute equal benefits, risks and rewards between the partners
Work on a scale appropriate to your resources and needs

Avoid these pitfalls
Don't chase funding with unrealistic partnerships / projects / programmes
Don't work with those who do not share common aims and objectives
Don't work in a partnership without evaluation
Don't be over ambitious
